Waiting on Wednesday (8)

The Glass Demon by Helen Grant (May 2010)

The first death: Seventeen-year-old Lin Fox finds a body in an orchard. As she backs away in horror, she steps on broken glass. The second death: Then blood appears on her doorstep – blood, and broken glass. The third death: Something terrible is found in the cemetery. Shards of broken glass lie by a grave. Who will be next? As the attacks become more sinister, Lin doesn’t know who to trust. She’s getting closer to the truth behind these chilling discoveries, but with each move the danger deepens. Because someone wants Lin gone – and won’t give up until he’s got rid of her and her family. Forever.

The cover is so pretty! And the synopsis is really intriguing as well; gotta love a murder mystery.

Waiting on Wednesday (7)

I think I should rename it Waiting on Sunday, because I never have time on Wednesdays to blog. Luckily though, Easter holidays start next week although I'll be revising for most of them :(.

Forgive my Fins by Tera Lynn Childs

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

This looks really interesting because it's about mermaids! I can't really recall seeing any previous YA books previous about mermaids. Also, the cover's really pretty. The romance aspect seems a little predictable (the gorgeous jock and the 'obnoxious, biker boy neighbour'- I think it's a bit obvious who she'll end up with) but fun anyway.

Waiting on Wednesday (6)

Waiting On Wednesdays is a weekly meme, hosted at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights highly anticipated releases.

This week, I've decided to spotlight two books because I forgot to do the meme last week, and I couldn't really choose between them because they both look so good!

Shadow Hills by Anastasia Hopcus

Since her sister’s mysterious death, Persephone “Phe” Archer has been plagued by a series of disturbing dreams. Determined to find out what happened to her sister, Phe enrolls at Devenish Prep in Shadow Hills, Massachusetts—the subject of her sister’s final diary entry.

After stepping on campus, Phe immediately realizes that there’s something different about this place—an unexplained epidemic that decimated the town in the 1700s, an ancient and creepy cemetery, and gorgeous boy Zach—and somehow she’s connected to it all.
But the more questions she asks and the deeper she digs, the more entangled Phe becomes in the haunting past of Shadow Hills. Finding what links her to this town…might cost her her life. -Goodreads.com

I can't wait to read this, primarily because it's set in a boarding school, and I absolutely love borading-school stories (think Harry Potter, A Great and Terrible Beauty, The Upper Class, Principles of Love, Prep, the Private series etc) but also because the plot itself is really intriguing.

Everlasting by Angie Frazier

Sailing aboard her father’s trade ship is all seventeen-year-old Camille Rowen has ever wanted. But as a girl of society in 1855 San Francisco, her future is set: marry a man she doesn’t love, or condemn herself and her father to poverty.

On her final voyage before the wedding, the stormy arms of the Tasman Sea claim her father, and a terrible family secret is revealed. A secret intertwined with a fabled map, the mother Camille has long believed dead, and an ancient stone that wields a dangerous—and alluring—magic.

The only person Camille can depend on is Oscar, a handsome young sailor whom she is undeniably drawn to. Torn between trusting her instincts and keeping her promises to her father, Camille embarks on a perilous quest into the Australian wilderness to find the enchanted stone. As she and Oscar elude murderous bushrangers and unravel Camille’s father’s lies, they come closer to making the ultimate decision of who—and what—matters most.

Beautifully written and feverishly paced, Everlasting is an unforgettable journey of passion, secrecy, and adventure.

This also looks particularly interesting because it's historical YA fiction which is the best because you learn so much about the past (if the book historically correct, anyway) without having to read tons of boring facts from a textbook. Also, the cover is so beautiful, and I love reading about relationships which cross the boundaries of social classes.

Nevermore by Kelly Creagh

At once an homage to one of America's greatest writers and a page-turning psychological mystery that is equal parts horror, humor, and romance, NEVERMORE is the story of Varen -- a Poe-fan and goth -- and Isobel -- a cheerleader and unlikely heroine.

When a Lit. project pairs the two together, Isobel finds herself steadily swept into Varen's world, one that he has created in his notebook and in his mind, one where the terrifying stories of Edgar Allan Poe come to life. Isobel slowly learns that dreams can be much more powerful than she'd ever expected, and that pain and despair come in all sorts of shades. As labels of "goth" and "cheerleader" fade away, she sees more in Varen than a tall, pale outcast, and a consuming romance is braced against the ever-clearer horror that the most terrifying realities are those within our own minds.

When Isobel has a single chance to rescue Varen from the shadows of his own nightmares, will she be able to save him -- and herself?

This looks really interesting, especially with the Edgar Allan Poe and psychological elements. It seems to be much more than the typical (although I do enjoy reading them :D) popular-girl-and-unpopular-guy cliche. Can't wait to read this!

Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison

THE TRANSFORMATION

Beth has always been “The Beast”—that’s what everyone at school calls her because of her awkward height, facial scars, and thick glasses. Beth’s only friend is geeky, golden-haired Scott. That is, until she’s selected to be her choir’s soprano soloist, and receives the makeover that will change her life forever.

THE LOVE AFFAIR

When Beth’s choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek’s untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless. Because in Derek’s eyes? She’s not The Beast, she’s The Beauty.

THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE

When Beth comes home, Scott, her best friend in the world, makes a confession that leaves her completely torn. Should she stand by sweet, steady Scott or follow the dangerous, intense new feelings she has for Derek?

THE HEARTBREAK

The closer Beth gets to Derek, the further away he seems. Then Beth discovers that Derek’s been hiding a dark secret from her …one that could shatter everything.

-Amazon.com

This does sorta seem like your typical YA-Supernatural novel (the dark, brooding, exceptionally attractive boy hiding a 'dark secret') but the foreign location and the fact that she used to be called 'The Beast' make me intrigued. I do hope though that the makeover is gradual, and not once of those takes-off-her-glasses-and-is-suddenly-beautiful things.

What is everyone else looking forward to reading?

The Season by Sarah Maclean

Seventeen year old Lady Alexandra is strong-willed and sharp-tongued -- in a house full of older brothers and their friends, she had to learn to hold her own. Not the best makings for an aristocratic lady in Regency London. Yet her mother still dreams of marrying Alex off to someone safe, respectable, and wealthy. But between ball gown fittings, dances, and dinner parties, Alex, along with her two best friends, Ella and Vivi, manages to get herself into what may be her biggest scrape yet.

When the Earl of Blackmoor is mysteriously killed, Alex decides to help his son, the brooding and devilishly handsome Gavin, uncover the truth. But will Alex's heart be stolen in the process? In an adventure brimming with espionage, murder, and other clandestine affairs, who could possibly have time to worry about finding a husband? Romance abounds as this year's season begins!

I'm aware this is already out in America but alas here in the UK it's not out 'til June. I can't wait to read it because I love historical fiction, especially Regency romances, and (this is superficial) I love the cover! It reminds me of The Luxe by Anna Godbersen, but better because it seems less focused on social-standing, and of course it's set in London!

Waiting on Wednesday (2)

Gone (Dream Catcher, #3) by Lisa McMann

The third and final book in the paranormal teen series that includes The New York Times bestseller Wake and Fade.

I absolutely LOVED Wake and Fade, the first two books in the series, because the plot of the whole series is so original, and Janie and Caleb are such wonderful, believable characters. This will hopefully be just as amazing!

Also, for those who are wondering when my next review will be up, I'm so sorry it's taking a long time but school's been extremely busy because of mocks, and then results.

On a side note, I ordered the Dark Divine by Bree Despain the other day and I can't wait to read it! Most of the review I've read of it have professed it to be amazing.
